GCT Finals: Pragg turns a six-point deficit into the title
Praggnanandhaa won the $200,000 Grand Chess Tour Finals title on August 27, defeating defending champion Caruana 15–13 in the eight-game knockout match. The match’s scoring system made the comeback possible but did not make it simple. A classical win was worth six points, a rapid win four, and a blitz win two. Caruana won the first classical game, then the second classical game was drawn, leaving him ahead 9–3. Praggnanandhaa answered by winning both rapid games for eight points. In the four-game blitz finish, the players traded one win each and drew twice, enough for Pragg to take the match by two points. 1

The win also made Praggnanandhaa the overall 2026 Grand Chess Tour champion. The tour’s official summary puts his season earnings at $404,354, ahead of Caruana on $297,958 and So on $280,625. The 2027 Finals are scheduled for September 26–October 4 in São Paulo, while the tour’s next season begins with the Super Chess Classic in Bucharest on April 16–28. 2

The September 1 FIDE classical list captures the rating effect of the Saint Louis events. Praggnanandhaa gained 11 points to reach 2761, moving to No. 8 overall and overtaking Arjun Erigaisi as India’s top-ranked player. So gained nine points after winning the Sinquefield Cup and returned to the top five at No. 5. 3

The women’s list also moved sharply after the Cairns Cup. Tan Zhongyi rose three places to No. 6 at 2536, gaining 16 points. Ju Wenjun regained No. 2, while Lei Tingjie fell to No. 3 after losing nine points. Global Chess League returns to Bengaluru
The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League’s fourth season will run in Bengaluru, with the main competition scheduled for September 5–13. The preview describes league activity beginning on September 3; the first round is Saturday, September 5. Six franchises will use a team format in which a Black win scores four points and a White win scores three. Games are 20 minutes long, with a two-second increment only after move 40. 4

Kanizsa Open: four players finish on seven points
GM Pranesh Munirethinam won Group A of the Kanizsa Open with 7/9, unbeaten, after beating IM Vadym Petrovskiy in the final round.
